Monday Muse - Courtney Love
Definition : A person or personified force who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist.
She is no stranger to controversy, but something about her is so fascinating. Courtney Love was the queen of the 90's. She was the true definition of a grunge girl. Courtney is probably best known as the wife of the late grunge god, Kurt Cobain. Now, I know some may be asking why Courtney Love is one of my muses and it's because she is unapologetically herself. She doesn't want to be the most popular or put together musician/celebrity and I think that's what makes her stand out.
I recently watched a video of Courtney giving a closet tour (you can watch it here!) and ohhhh myyyy godddd, I wish I could borrow everything in it! Long story short, Courtney used to work at a film studio and has left over vintage dressed from the late 1800's to the early 1900's. In the 80's and 90's, she would rework the pieces to make them into cool grungy stage outfits.
I think one of the best things about Courtney's style is that she always looks effortless and undone. I think that is the true representation of grunge style in the 90's, look cool but not like you tired to look cool.
Because of her relationship with Kurt Cobain and the tragedy surrounding it, I think that the public started to have a really negative view about Courtney. They only thought of her as Kurt's wife and not her own person. But one of the most amazing things about her was her music career with her band, Hole. There are not many rock bands with a female lead vocalist, especially then in the grunge scene. Courtney was a voice for woman. She was a badass that made really good songs and had awesome style. To add to that, all but one of the members of whole was a woman, which really paved the way for woman in rock today.
A couple of years ago, Courtney partnered with Nasty Gal to create the most insane grunge collection. It was incredible. So stylish and bringing 90's grunge in more modern way. I wish that I would have been able to buy some pieces before everything sold out, which it did, FAST!
